Jacob & Co. The Godfather II

The Godfather II is the world’s only dual-melody musical timepiece. Where a conventional musical watch plays a single tune, Jacob & Co. spent three years developing a movement that offers a choice of two. The two compositions, written by Nino Rota for Francis Ford Coppola’s saga, are “The Godfather’s Waltz,” first heard in the original film’s wedding scene, and “The Godfather Love Theme,” the franchise’s signature melody.

A selector at 10 o’clock shifts the music-box mechanism laterally by less than a millimetre, changing which pins of the brass cylinder engage the 18-tooth steel comb. A pusher at 8 o’clock then releases the chosen melody, which plays for 15 to 20 seconds. As the music begins, a retractable aperture at the top of the dial opens to reveal the rotating music-box barrel, which remains visible for the duration of the melody. All of this is driven by the JCAM62, an entirely new 510-component calibre that fits both melodies onto a single barrel while remaining compact enough to also accommodate a one-minute flying tourbillon.

The watch carries two dedicated power-reserve systems: a 72-hour reserve for timekeeping and the tourbillon, and a separate one for the music box, which can be activated up to 10 times on a full wind.

The curved, Art Deco-inspired case in 18K rose gold measures 42 by 44 mm, its caseband engraved with Don Corleone’s rose. A black lacquered dial carries a portrait of Marlon Brando as Don Corleone beneath puppet strings rendered in three-dimensional appliqué; the crown is cut with spiral grooves that evoke a gun barrel; and a piano-shaped sapphire caseback reveals the music-box comb beneath a plate engraved with the love theme's score.
