Baselworld 2013: Triple Treasures - The Palatial Tourbillon Collection

There's no complication more visually arresting than the tourbillon, and ever since its inventor patented it more than 200 years ago, it's been fascinating lovers of fine watchmaking with its beauty and enticing them with its rarity.

Originally a device intended to negate the negative effects of gravity on the accuracy of a watch, today the tourbillon –a rotating cage containing the parts of the watch that actually keep time –is prized for the history and heritage it represents, the craftsmanship necessary to make it, and the visual magic it brings to the watch it inhabits.

The Jacob & Co. Palatial Tourbillon Collection presents three astonishingly beautiful and hypnotically fascinating tourbillons, each designed to showcase the enduring appeal of this most magical of mechanisms.

The Palatial Manual Jump Hour Tourbillon adds to the visual dazzle of the tourbillon two additional functions: a jump hour disk, located at 10:00, with an instantaneous jump hour display, and a retrograde minutes counter sweeping across an arc to its right. The translucent dial allows the viewer to see the coordinated action of each of these fascinating complications, and, at the top of every hour, the synchronized return of the minutes hand and advance of the hour disk punctuate with a mechanical feast for the eyes the steady beat of the tourbillon below. Powering this mechanical visual symphony is the Jacob & Co, MHC manufactured caliber 0050, with a 100 hour power reserve.

The Palatial Minute Repeater similarly unveils its mechanical magic through the translucent blued sapphire crystal. The entire minute repeater mechanism, which is usually hidden away from view under the dial, is visible here –press the slide which arms and activates the repeater, and you'll not only hear the hours, quarter hours, and minutes rung on two cathedral gongs, with all the charm of an haute horlogerie timepiece and a musical instrument combined –you'll see the incomparable mechanical dance of the complex system of racks, snails, and levers that bring to life the song of time. The Palatial Minute Repeater features the manually wound Jacob & Co, MHC manufactured caliber 3100, with an 85 hour power reserve.

Finally, the Palatial Hand‐Wound Tourbillon is the tourbillon at its most pure. The stunning blued sapphire dial reveals the fascinating transformation of stored mechanical energy into the intricate whirling of the tourbillon mechanism, while on the back of the watch, a concealed power reserve indication shows the energy remaining in the impressive 100 hour power reserve of this horological purist's fantasy come to life. The movement is the manually wound Jacob & Co, MHC manufactured caliber 1351.

Of course, each Palatial Tourbillon is finished to the very highest standards, with black polished steelwork, hand‐finished flanks and internal angles on the plates and bridges, and special enhancements including top‐plate bridges in black gold. The balance of each tourbillon is also a high performance feast for the eyes, in titanium with gold timing screws. With their rich blued sapphire dials and flawlessly executed movements, each Palatial Tourbillon is a window into the very heart of haute horlogerie.
